This art center, located in an old priory at the edge of the Sonian Forest, explores the relationship between writings and images in exhibits by contemporary Belgian and foreign artists.

The Red Cloister Abbey Art Center expositions have a central directive, to make known what text and image can be recognized as art and graphics. This theme translates into other areas such as illustrators of children’s books and authors of comic strips. To this direction comes three complimentary areas: (1) the recognition of Belgian artists or Belgian artistic movements which form the basis of researched retrospectives, (2) the promotion of contemporary creations through special awards , (le Prix Découverte [the discovery prize]) or bi-annual competitions that promote artistic talents and (3) finally, the discovery of foreign heritage and collaborations with organizations such as Europalia.
