The small town of Sollerod is shaken by the arrival of a motley band of newcomers. Wherever they go, they pretend to be people with intellectual disabilities. By letting their “inner fool” take over, they seek to build a better world. Within this group, Stoffer quickly establishes himself as a power-hungry leader. He pushes the others to go beyond all limits, both sexually and psychologically. Will they be willing to follow him all the way and leave their old lives behind for good?
Lars von Trier is the co-founder of the Danish production company Zentropa as well as one of the founders of the Danish Dogma movement in the 1990s. Lars von Trier’s films have won prizes worldwide. These include many of the major awards at Cannes Film Festival: the Palme d’Or for Dancer in the Dark, the Grand Prix du Jury for Breaking the Waves, the Best Actress award for Charlotte Gainsbourg’s performance in Antichrist, as well as the Best Actress award for Kirsten Dunst’s performance in Melancholia. The Idiots is his contribution to Dogma 95.
The screening will be introduced by Per Juul Carlsen. Lecturer, cultural journalist, and podcaster from Danemark, Per Juul Carlsen is a leading authority on Dogma 95 and its founders, a subject he explored in depth in his book The Miracle 1996 – 2006. In the first part of Close-Up: Dogma 95, Carlsen will introduce the audience to the movement that profoundly reshaped Danish cinema and repositioned it on the global stage, offering insight into its origins and behind-the-scenes stories.
