Initiation Extended

A while back, Sophye Soliveau struck the audience dumb at one of our nocturnes; now the French singer, harpist and choir director is paying a longer visit to Bozar. Feel free to drop her name in the pub as clear proof that jazz and vocals are definitely a thing again. On her debut album, INITIATION, the soulful artists with roots in Guadeloupe goes in search of the origins of her musical inspiration: the rhythm-and-blues of Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith. These iconic blues singers from the 1920s-1940s openly advocated equal rights, free female sexuality and emancipation. Now we’re advocating that Soliveau should – and must – be heard more!
