Joachim and Cæcilie, a young couple from Copenhagen, have just decided to get married when Joachim is involved in a car accident. He survives, but remains paralysed. Marie, the driver responsible, wracked with guilt, calls her husband Niels, a doctor at the hospital, to help the couple. Rejected by a bitter Joachim, Cæcilie seeks comfort from Niels.
Susanne Bier graduated from the National Danish Film School in 1987. An internationally acclaimed director, she won the Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film for In a Better World (2011). Following this success, she turned to American cinema with films such as Things We Lost in the Fire and acclaimed series such as The Night Manager and Bird Box. Open Hearts is her contribution to the Dogme 95 movement.
