Christoph Prégardien bids farewell to the stage with lieder by Schubert, Eisler, Mahler, Wolf and Schumann.

Everything passes, nothing stays the same. Sometimes it seems as if all we can do is cast a nostalgic look back. And in truth, looking back at what has passed is a recurrent theme in the German lied tradition, imbued as it is with melancholy.

German tenor Christoph Prégardien is well versed in this tradition. Remember his earlier performances at La Monnaie of Hans Zender’s Winterreise, Mozart’s Abendempfindung, Schumann’s Dichterliebe and Wolf’s Italienisches Liederbuch. With the programme Memories, he now presents a selection of German lieder from different periods, his intelligent musicality manifesting itself in a sensitive dramaturgy, the culmination of a rich career. Recalled memories are at times accompanied by nostalgia, and grating irony more than once gives way to loss and mourning. The fact that this recital is also part of his farewell tour as a lied singer lends a symbolic significance to this retrospective programme.

Christoph Prégardien will be accompanied by pianist Stefan Litwin, who with Memories will take his first steps on our stage.
