In the context of the Irish Presidency, Bozar welcomes Gerard Byrne, one of Ireland’s most prominent and prolific contemporary artists. Curator Padraic E. Moore will discuss his work with him, and a selection of his latest film and video works will be screened. Gerard Byrne is an artist working in Ireland, and a teacher to young artists in Staedelschule, Frankfurt. His work recovers futures past, gleaning historical legacies from the Chrysler Imperial, Playboy Magazine interviews, Minimalist Art through photographs, Proto-Cinema and Natural History, and most recently the art historical significance of the Mamiya 7 rangefinder camera. He recently co-curated (with Judith Wilkinson) the first comprehensive exhibition of seven teleplays made by Samuel Beckett in Stuttgart Germany (WKV Stuttgart). He works primarily through photographs, film & video, and occasional publishing.
