KBR is the national scientific library and collects all Belgian publications. The institution preserves, manages and studies more than 8 million documents, a rich cultural and historical heritage. It provides the public with access to information, facilitates research and offers a broad cultural experience.

As a national library, the KBR acquires, catalogues and stores everything published in Belgium. As a scientific library it acquires international publications and makes them available to readers. As well as printed documents (books, journals and periodicals) the library holds important collections of manuscripts, maps and plans, coins and medals, ancient printed materials, stamps and sheet music.
