Three major figures of the Symbolist visual arts maintained deep connections with the musical world, whether through interpersonal relationships or artistic exchanges. A gallery of portraits and networks will emerge throughout a narrative interweaving artworks, letters, writings and press articles of the time. The figure of Joséphin Péladan, the flamboyant animator of this Symbolist, esoteric and artistic milieu, will run through the discussion. In contrast to this elitist, royalist and ultramontane Péladanism, the societal engagement of Brussels Symbolist artists will be retraced, including its Flemish component. The concerts mentioned will be musically illustrated, privileging the music/literature prism… revealing that fin-de-siècle Brussels was one of the great centers of European musical creation.
After his presentation, the speaker will be pleased to comment on a few exhibited works that illustrate his argument.
Lecture in French.
