At first glance, Positive Tension (in the air) is nothing more than a dazzling explosion of confetti. Viewed closely, however, each piece of paper reveals critical and playful questions about a new museum aspiring to become a plural site for art, a public forum for democracy and a laboratory for hospitality.

For Kanal’s opening, the artist collective Apparatus 22 presents A museum lover has questions, a new chapter in their ongoing series of confetti explosions. Ten questions probe the possibilities and pitfalls of a new institution.
Over a period of three years, interventions and instructions will gradually infiltrate Kanal, inviting people who are fascinated by museums to reflect on their role and meaning. Blending fiction, storytelling and critique, the work keeps questions alive rather than seeking definitive answers or consensus, treating the act of asking as fundamental to public institutions.
This commission forms part of How to open, the first year of Protocols for opening the museum, a three-year inquiry into what it means for a new museum in Brussels to be truly open, welcoming and public.
