Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. Violin Phase

  • Events

To open the season, Bozar presents Violin Phase, one of the four movements from Fase, Four Movements to the Music by Steve Reich, the first performance by choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, created in 1982. More than 40 years after its creation, the choreographer performs this iconic solo herself, alternating with one of the dancers from her company, Yuika Hashimoto.
De Keersmaeker uses Reich’s music structure to develop an independent movement language that not only illustrates the music but adds a new dimension to it. The movements, initially synchronous, shift in circular patterns with strict repetitions, playing brilliantly with the music’s formalism and drama. This iconic piece will be performed four times on September 21. The solo, alternately performed by Yuika Hashimoto and De Keersmaeker herself, will trace beautiful rose patterns in the sand, visible from above in the Rotunda of the Galerie Ravenstein.
The performance A Little Bit of the Moon by Rabih Mroué and Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, programmed at Bozar on Monday, 22 September, directly refers to Violin Phase and the lasting inspiration it continues to generate.
