The Halle Gate is a fairy-tale monument more than 600 years old and the last surviving vestige of Brussels’ second line of city walls.
Step into its medieval atmosphere and discover a remarkable collection of artworks and objects that, together with the building itself, tell the story of the city and its fortifications, at the crossroads of Europe. Among the highlights are pieces linked to Charles V and the Archdukes Albert and Isabella.
Originally a fortified gate built in the 14th century, it was later used as a customs house, a prison, and an archive depot. Today, the Halle Gate is a unique museum dedicated to the history of Brussels. (The wall walk is currently closed for renovation works.)
As part of the Brussels Renaissance Festival, the visit of the permanent collections of the Halle Gate sheds light on the role of Brussels during the Renaissance, particularly in the time of Charles V.
