Carte Blanche: Albert Serra

As part of a carte blanche given to director Albert Serra, a selection of films is being screened, including El crimen de la calle Bordadores by Edgar Neville. The film takes us back to late 19th-century Madrid, in a working-class neighbourhood where a respectable woman is found murdered. Several suspects come to light, sparking a police investigation that blends elements of both thriller and American-style comedy.
Through this unexpected work, the director paints a distorted portrait of Madrid, reminiscent of Goya, mixing flamenco and bullfighting. Just as Goya revealed the human figures and daily hardships in his paintings, Neville uses his camera to suggest a Spain full of contradictions, swinging between humour and horror.
