The Cookery 2026 : Listening to dead machines - Clarice Calvo-Pinsolle + Thomas Teurlai

  • Courses and workshops
The second masterclass of The Cookery 2026, led by Thomas Teurlai and Clarice Calvo-Pinsolle, invites participants to explore the invisible sounds of everyday machines.

Through an experimental and collective approach, participants will build electromagnetic microphones using components salvaged from domestic appliances (microwave ovens, washing machines, small household devices, etc.), in order to reveal the electromagnetic fields they emit and compose a form of mechanical orchestration from them.

Each participant is invited to bring a broken or discarded machine or appliance. From these objects, we will identify and recover, in particular, the coils needed to build DIY electromagnetic microphones.

The workshop will also include the making of piezo microphones, capable of capturing the internal vibrations and resonances of the machines. By combining electromagnetic and vibrational recording, we will set up a listening device that reveals the hidden sonic dynamics of these technical objects.

Practical info

This 2-days masterclass takes place on Saturday 27 + Sunday 28.06.2026, from 10:00 to 18:00

Languages: EN/FR

Participants are invited to bring old household appliances, electronic tools, machines and anything that we can take apart to salvage components.
