Marriage is out of the question for Princess Turandot. To avoid tying the knot with one or other stranger, she lays down a terrible rule: Anyone seeking her hand must solve three riddles. While three right answers will result in marriage, a single wrong answer will result in death by beheading. Blinded by his love for the emperor’s daughter, the mysterious Prince Calaf takes up the challenge.
Giacomo Puccini died in Brussels in 1924, leaving the score of his last opera unfinished. A century later, conductor Kazushi Ono and director Christophe Coppens prove that the work has more to offer than its iconic aria ‘Nessun dorma’. Coppens sets Turandot in present-day Hong Kong, where an immensely rich family is losing itself in money, power and violence. Trying to escape her mother’s iron grip, the rebellious Turandot finds herself in a maelstrom of derailed fantasy that drives her to extremes.
