This film will be screened extra muros at Cinema RITCS.
A radical aesthetic and story, made by one of the most important woman director of contemporary cinema: Sally Potter. As part of the Close-up on film theorist and filmmaker Laura Mulvey and of the parallel programme to the Akerman’s exhibition, we asked Mulvey to choose one film that touched and inspired her. She choose the cult film and debut feature film by British director Sally Potter, The Gold Diggers.
Made with an all-woman crew, featuring stunning photography by Babette Mangolte and a score by Lindsay Cooper, The Gold Diggers embraces a radical and experimental narrative structure. Celeste is a computer clerk in a bank who becomes fascinated by the relationship between gold and power. Ruby is an enigmatic film star in quest of her childhood, her memories and the truth about her own identity. As their paths cross they come to sense that there could be a link between the male struggle for economic supremacy and the female ideal of mysterious but impotent beauty.
