Subjected to humiliations by her stepsisters, Cinderella also sees her fortune squandered by her own father. But her goodness and courage win the heart of Prince Don Ramiro, who recognizes her true worth.
A great composer for voices, Gioachino Rossini achieved another tour de force with La Cenerentola. Virtuoso arias, sustained vocal lines, subtle nuances, a fast-paced text and expressive richness all serve the refined characterizations. The ensembles, which range from duets to a stunning sextet, are among the most memorable in the repertoire.
For his debut at La Monnaie, director Daniel Kramer breathes new life into this tale inspired by Charles Perrault that blends magic and humour with dark undertones. Conductors Speranza Scappucci and Stefano Sarzani, who will also be making their debut in Brussels, will sublimate Rossini’s most beautiful melodies.
