Jaibo, a teenager escaped from a reformatory, returns to his old neighborhood, where not only his friends but also his thirst for revenge awaits him. In front of his friend Pedro, he kills the man he believes responsible for his incarceration. Their fates become tragically entwined.
Los Olvidados, translated as ​‘the forgotten’, is an unflinching look at social and moral misery, with a nightmarish tone. Though shot in Mexico, the film from 1950 bears a deeply Spanish imprint. Like Goya, Luis Buñuel believed cinema should denounce a brutal, hypocritical, and unjust world — through powerful, evocative images. As part of his Close-up, Spanish director Albert Serra chose this timeless black-and-white film.
