Before there was any such thing as the laptop generation, Fennesz – one of our portrait artists this season – stretched his computer program to the limits and made eager use of his electric guitar’s effect pedals. His typical electroacoustic ambient, full of deliberate and accidental glitches, was born. This key figure in electronic music will present no fewer than three projects at Bozar. This concert is a live version of his most recent album, Mosaic, which emerged from a disciplined nine-to-five working pattern and hours of tinkering with the tiniest details. As in his 2008 album Black Sea, the guitar often rises up out of the soundscapes, but it remains in perfect balance with the electronics. For his long-time fans, this is a reunion on familiar ground; for newcomers, it is an ideal introduction to his craft. Or, as Pitchfork rightly remarks: “Fennesz may not care much if he surprises us, but he never runs out of ways to get us.”
