Collection: The collection presents more than 1,200 musical instruments, one of the richest in the world.
Description: To walk into the Museum of Musical Instruments (MIM) is to discover a wonderful world of original and traditional pieces, from all periods of time and continents. The MIM has its quarters in a magnificent Art Nouveau building erected in 1899 and designed by architect Paul Saintenoy. Superbly renovated, it used to house the Old England shops. In this exceptional setting, the MIM exhibits some 1,500 instruments in a high-quality showcase that will delight all visitors: instruments reveal themselves on four floors, as well as a story based on a hundred or so different topics. At the lower ground floor, a collection centred on the 19th and 20th centuries sits next to mechanical instruments and a beautiful set of bells. Popular instruments from Belgium, Europe and other continents share the ground floor in perfect harmony, while the first level offers a historical journey from Antiquity to the present day. The next level up is devoted to the development of clavichords, harpsichords, pianos, citharas and other stringed instruments. And thanks to a clever infrared audio-headset system, visitors can discover the sound of each instrument on display at their own pace; musical breaks along a tour that can be appreciated one floor at a time.
The restaurant/tea-room of the MIM is located on the top floor: refined cuisine with a sweeping view of the city. Enjoy the terrace in the summer time. (Royal Museums of Art and History)
